Coming out to family and friends can be challenging. Sometimes, family members think they want what is best for you, but they may not understand what transition is, and may have many questions and concerns. Generational or cultural differences can exacerbate concerns and conflicts. I have worked with several parents, families, and partners who are struggling with a loved one’s transition. In therapy, we can talk about how to express your thoughts and feelings most effectively, how to work through questions and concerns, and provide resources for your loved one.

If you don’t identify with your assigned sex at birth, are questioning how you identify, or identify as transgender, you may be looking for a therapist who is familiar with gender identity issues.
Taking the step from considering your gender identity and researching online to meeting with someone and sharing your feelings is a big one. It’s essential to know you are safe, your privacy is protected, and there are no expectations or boxes you’re supposed to fit into.
Therapy is a place to talk about anything affecting your mood, including depression, anxiety, trauma, relationships, job stress, and financial worries. My goal is to help you transition from whatever causes distress to being more authentically you. We’ll start by talking about which areas of your life cause gender dysphoria and how this affects you. We can discuss changes you would like to make or explore options that might help you feel more like yourself. That may mean choosing a new label. It may also mean choosing not to have a label at all.

I have extensive experience doing gender therapy and writing referral letters for gender affirming surgery, in line with WPATH guidelines. In therapy, we can talk about your feelings and discuss how to manage your gender dysphoria. We can also explore what steps, if any, you might want to take to feel more comfortable in your body and your interactions with others.
